King Dodon. N. Rimsky - Korsakov “The Golden Cockerel”. Teatro Real, Madrid.

From May 25 to June 9, the Spanish premiere of one of the most famous Russian operas by N. Rimsky-Korsak “The Golden Cockerel” based on the poem “The Tale of the Golden Cockerel” by A. S. Pushkin took place at the Royal Theater of Madrid. Dmitry Ulyanov played the title role - Dodon - a despotic, but at the same time childishly capricious and tired of all the pleasures of the king's life. For Dmitry, this was his debut in the role of Tsar Dodon on the already almost native stage of the Teatro Real, where he had previously sung King René in the opera “Iolanta” by Tchaikovsky, Pimen in Mussorgsky’s opera “Boris Godunov”, Don Basilio in “The Barber of Seville” by G. Rossini and other parties.

Performances with Dmitry's participation took place on May 25, 28, 31 and June 3, 5, 9, 2017. Conductor: Ivor Bolton. Stage director and costume designer: Laurent Pelly. The Queen of Shemakhan was sung by Venera Gimadieva, the sons of Dodon were Sergei Skorokhodov (Tsarevich Gvidon) and Alexey Lavrov (Tsarevich Afron), and the Astrologer was sung by Alexander Kravets.

PRESS:

“Wonderful bass Dmitry Ulyanov, whose career ranges from roles in War and Peace to Aida, from Prince Igor to The Huguenots.” A powerful and well-balanced voice is able to highlight many comic situations - such as the heart-rending scream he lets out when he discovers the death of his two sons. Ulyanov is also a good actor, exaggerating the clumsiness of the stupid Tsar, and has a lot of fun in the short dance section of the second act.”

“Bas Dmitry Ulyanov is the ideal Tsar Dodon: both in the behavior of a fat, clumsy grandfather-tsar, and in his bright, energetic, strong voice even in the most difficult moments (for example, in the passage where he mourns his dead sons, at the beginning of the second act)."

“A few years ago, in a concert version of “The Huguenots” at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Dmitry Ulyanov demonstrated his bright bass. This is the ideal King Dodon, both vocally and artistically.”
